STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Americana
The storyline to appear on the runways of Fashion Week in New York was “purely Americana,” to quote New York Times writer, Ruth La Ferla. Designers drew inspiration from the northeast colonial architecture, across to the rugged Rocky Mountains, and all the way over to give a hint of southwest flavor. There was a blend of clean city lines and rustic country tones, which created a week of fashion truly energized by the unique culture of America.
Many designers like Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs dove into their history in search of American inspiration while many like Michael Kors paid tribute to past fashion icons. Designers sought inspiration from tangible, everyday places all Americans have encountered. Concerts, locker rooms, the office and backyards all served as the canvas at fashion week. Old Hollywood lace and military leather also helped portray “Americana”. Sportswear, clean tailoring and varsity jackets paired with sweaters created a preppy chic look. This sporty vibe shared the spotlight on the catwalks with cozy ponchos and grass-grazing maxi dresses and coats with an outdoorsy, native feeling. American Indian embellishments like feathers and beading contributed to the rural feel.
Finding the “Americana” style doesn’t have to cost a fortune. This Fashionista looked right into her mom’s closet to find her inspiration. Her red letterman’s jacket was her mom’s in high school and had been tucked away for a few years. The large jacket paired with a black mini skirt and knee-highs create a great balance for vibrant jacket.

deep in the closet for inspiration will create a look worthy of both past and present
